Finishing -

The oak tree undergoes a dramatic transformation as it makes its way into our homes. It is a beautiful, tough, natural material that deserves to be treasured for years, and careful preservation will ensure its longevity.

Once felled and sawn, the oak remains outside "in stick" for approximately one year per inch of thickness, allowing it to air dry naturally. It is then placed in a kiln to reduce the moisture content to a level suitable for furniture making.

Our signature finish aims to nourish the oak by replenishing the natural oils lost during the drying process, leaving the wood looking as natural as possible. We achieve this using a "natural" Hardwax Oil. "Natural" means no color is added; the oil is derived from natural plant sources that are food-safe and toy-safe. This oil soaks into the surface, providing exceptional protection, while the wax imparts a silky satin sheen.

We have chosen this finish over conventional plastic finishes like lacquer and varnish because it is easy to maintain and restore. Kitchens are high-traffic areas used heavily every day; scuffs, scratches, and spills are bound to happen. When they do, hardwax oil is very forgiving. Unlike varnishes, which require professional attention involving extensive mechanical sanding and multiple coats of a thick sticky coating, hardwax oil needs only a light hand sanding of the affected area and a quick wipe with a little more oil. Regular maintenance with occasional reapplication of the oil will keep the surface looking refreshed and like new.

We are often asked if we provide a "white washed" oak finish. In response, we developed our own 'Whitened Oak' finish using a linseed oil base. Linseed oil has been used extensively as a wood treatment for centuries due to its durability. It has been applied to oak worktops for high water resistance and even as an exterior wood paint for year-long protection from the elements.

Our 'Whitened Oak' finish incorporates a white pigment that settles into the grain of the oak, creating a stunning white pattern across the contoured surface of the furniture. The linseed oil soaks into the oak, offering protection while allowing the wood's subtle warmth to shine through.
